Internet Junkie Mental Illness?

March 25, 2008 · 3 Comments

Dr. Jerald Block from the Oregon Health & Science University wrote an editorial in the March issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry stating compulsive internet use should be classified as a mental illness, under the parameters of addiction. He points out that excessive time spent online leads to cravings and withdrawals and the neglect of basic human needs, just like any other addiction.

Uh oh…I hate to admit it but this hits home. I can’t tell you how many days I’ve realized I haven’t eaten because I was sucked into web surfing, video watching and social networking for the previous 7 hours. In fact, I should be sleeping right now but instead I’m STILL online. And from observing my fellow geeky friends, it seems I’m not the only one having trouble disconnecting. We all carry phones that allow us to log on at any moment, we are in a constant convo through twitter and quite a few of us have had to force ourselves to take a mandatory time out to focus on the 3D world.   Are we crazy???

Let’s all try to remember balance and prove this doctor wrong! :p

MGMT

March 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

On my last night in Austin, I saw a band called MGMT play. They were a great live show and I was intrigued with their sound. Its almost psychedelic yet electronic. The lead singer has a distinct voice that reminds me of someone but I can’t quite put my finger on it. After checking out their website, I was blown away with how they started. They were just experimenting in college with different funky sounds…playing live 15 minute shows, never planning on becoming a recorded group. Their original goal was to write songs that people hated. “Some songs we wrote just because we wanted to learn how to be really bad within a certain genre and then people started liking the song because they liked the genre. It was an accident that people started liking us.”

They have released a full album Oracular Spectacular. I’ve been listening to “Time to Pretend” on repeat since I got back home. Check out their MySpace to sample some songs. They also have some videos up on YouTube.  I hope you enjoy as much as I do!

SXSW FTW

March 4, 2008 · 3 Comments

Just about everyone I know is gearing up for this years SXSW, including me! I’m trying to organize myself, figure out what I need to do/who I need to track down while in Austin and of course pack. I’m a bit hectic because I’m squeezing in a trip to Atlanta prior to Austin. My bestest friend from my young’n days is preggos with her first kid and I need to go see this baby bump before it turns into an actual child.

But, back to SXSW. I went last year with Julie for Nontourage. I had soooooo much fun. Thats where I first met Scott and Pete of iTunes, the Ask a Ninja guys and the power agents of UTA. I also stood a few feet away from Ze Frank! Aaaaand…I ate some awesome BBQ. Here’s the video Julie and I made from that trip. But, don’t look at my hair! Austin is humid and my hair does crazy things in humidy.

Its so funny that I’m setting up Twitter in this vid. Since then it has been a huge part of my life. I gotsta get back to packing…if you are going to be in Austin, drop me a line!

The Same Will Ferrell I’ve Grown to Love

March 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

For all of you who say Will Ferrell is just doing his same old schtick, read the interview he did with Entertainment Weekly. I love his response…”For every person who says, ‘I’ve seen you do that before,’ someone else will say, ‘I love when you do that thing.”’

Good point! I really like watching Will Ferrell do the Will Ferrell thing.

Semi-Pro is full of funny lines, crazy characters and absurd situations. Exactly what you expect it to deliver. But, it also has a story that tugged at my heart with developed characters that I rooted for. I say, leave your prejudices at the door and give Semi-Pro a shot.
